WARM UP THIS WINTER

Installing a spa pool in Australia is straightforward when you prepare correctly. This guide covers everything you need to do before your Spas Wholesale spa pool arrives — from site preparation to electrical requirements.

Spas Wholesale has completed thousands of spa deliveries across Australia with our 40+ years of industry experience. Here's what our team recommends every buyer do before delivery day.

1. Site Preparation

Base Requirements

Your spa pool needs a flat, level, load-bearing surface. Options include:

  • Concrete pad (recommended): Minimum 100mm thick reinforced concrete. Most reliable long-term option.
  • Reinforced timber deck: Must be engineered to support the weight of a full spa (water + people = often 1,500-3,000kg+)
  • Pavers or tiles: Must be on a solid compacted base — unsuitable if there's any give or movement

Weight Calculations

  • Empty spa weight: 200-500kg depending on model
  • Water weight: approximately 1kg per litre (most spas hold 700-2,000 litres)
  • Occupant weight: 75-100kg per person
  • Total load example: 6-person spa = approx. 2,000-3,000kg when full

2. Delivery Access

Before delivery day, measure and confirm:

  • Minimum 2.5m wide access path from street to final location
  • Minimum 3m height clearance for truck and lifting equipment
  • Turn radius for delivery vehicle at gates/corners
  • Gate width (many spas are 2.0-2.3m wide)

If access is tight, let us know — Spas Wholesale arranges crane lifts for difficult access properties across Australia.

3. Electrical Requirements

Standard Requirements

  • 32A dedicated circuit for most 5+ person spa pools and swim spas
  • 15A or 10/15A circuit for smaller plug-and-play models
  • Residual Current Device (RCD) protection required
  • Must be installed by a licensed electrician — required by Australian electrical standards

Important: Book Your Electrician Early

Electrical work must be completed before spa delivery or immediately after. Most buyers book their electrician 1-2 weeks before delivery.

4. Fencing and Safety Requirements

Australian states have varying requirements for spa pool barriers. Key rules:

  • Most states require a compliant pool fence or barrier for spas accessible to children under 5
  • Your spa cover can count as a barrier if it meets the relevant Australian Standard (AS 1926.2)
  • Check your state's specific requirements — NSW, VIC, QLD, WA, SA and TAS each have slightly different rules
  • Contact your local council for specific requirements before installation

5. Planning and Council Approval

Most portable spa pools in Australia do NOT require council development approval. However, there are exceptions:

  • In-ground installation: typically requires DA
  • Strata/body corporate properties: may require approval
  • Heritage-listed properties: check with local council
  • Deck construction: may trigger separate approval requirements

Spas Wholesale's team can advise on typical requirements for your state — call 1300 185 338.

6. Pre-Delivery Checklist Summary
